HAS TRAVELLING CHANGED THE WAY YOU SEE YOUR SOUTH AFRICAN HERITAGE OR INFLUENCED THE MUSIC YOU WRITE? I used to think that I had to live in America in order to be a musician, but my travels have shown me that isn’ t true. Sure, the“ industry” is that side, but I can still do what I love while living in the city I love, and that is important to me.
I wouldn’ t say travelling has necessarily influenced my music because I don’ t think of it as“ South African”. I’ m a pop musician who makes pop music and I happen to be proudly South African. I hope to inspire the next generation of South African musicians and show them that they don’ t have to grow up in America or England to become pop artists. South Africans have talent to show the world!
IMAGINE YOU’ RE HOSTING A HERITAGE MONTH BRAAI AND CAN INVITE ANY FIVE SOUTH AFRICAN MUSICIANS, PAST OR PRESENT. WHO MAKES THE GUEST LIST? Johnny Clegg, Matthew Mole, Miriam Makeba, Abdullah Ibrahim, and Lloyiso. I don’ t know if I’ m able to delegate the various jobs, but I think we’ d have a great time together!
HOLDING THE LINE, FEATURED IN PRIME VIDEO’ S OFF CAMPUS, HAS STRUCK A CHORD WITH FANS AROUND THE WORLD. DID YOU EXPECT THAT RESPONSE, AND WHAT’ S BEEN THE MOST MEMORABLE REACTION? I didn’ t expect the song to do as well as it has, and it’ s been an absolute blessing. Seeing people sing it when we play it live has been so cool and honestly caught me by surprise. I’ ve also loved seeing people’ s reactions to it being in the show and reading all the messages I’ ve received. I’ ve felt incredibly supported!
