FINDING LUXURY IN FREEDOM Ask Bonang what luxury means in 2026 and her answer may surprise you. It isn’ t handbags, jewellery, or champagne.“ Luxury is freedom. The freedom to make your own decisions and to experience and use your own time any way you wish,” she says. It’ s a perspective that perfectly reflects where she is todaysuccessful, certainly, but also intentional.
CHANGING THE CONDITIONS Bonang has achieved countless milestones throughout her career, but she’ s more interested in what comes after the applause. She hopes future generations of African creatives will find more doors open because she dared to push them first.
PASSPORT ALWAYS READY Travel has long been one of Bonang’ s greatest passions. Her personal motto says it all:“ You need to work hard, make money, and travel the world. Repeat.”“ Seeing the world for me is paramount. I’ m a lover of exploring cultures because that’ s where I get my inspiration,” she says.
Although she’ s visited Paris nearly 10 times and lived in New York for two years, it’ s Prague that holds a special place in her heart.“ The history, the buildings, the food, the people … Prague will always be a standout.”
She finds equal joy in South Africa’ s natural beauty.“ My favourite trip is to take a five-hour drive up to Mpumalanga and spend a weekend at the Kruger National Park.” She also regularly escapes to the Garden Route whenever her schedule allows.
After 22 years in the spotlight, Bonang Mateba has discovered that the true measure of success isn’ t simply being seen. The glamour remains, but now it sits inside a larger project of ownership, freedom, and the deliberate use of influence.
“ I want to be remembered not necessarily by my name, but by how I’ ve changed the conditions.” That may be the clearest expression of where she is now. Bonang is using what visibility gave her for something more durable in the brands, platforms, and path younger women can walk with fewer locked doors in front of them. The next chapter of her story is centred on the real luxury and ambition: freedom and legacy. IB
