HOW HAS YOUR SONGWRITING EVOLVED SINCE THE BEGINNING OF YOUR CAREER? The biggest change has been as a result of my personal development. I am a writer at heart, and as I developed self-confidence, I decided to commit to being understood. As a creative, it takes a lot to put yourself out there. The main thing that has changed is my approach to writing.
WHO ARE THE ARTISTS OR EXPERIENCES THAT CONTINUE TO SHAPE YOUR MUSICAL IDENTITY TODAY? I describe my approach to RnB and Soul as“ Neo Nostalgia”. I have favourite artists, but I am more creatively inspired by the eras of music that shaped me as a person, like the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST TURNING POINT IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR? There are private moments and those in the public eye. My single Aweh has been a defining moment for me: the remix, the awards, and the plaques. In private, it is the decision to embrace myself in my most natural state and the challenge of being understood, and to be brave enough to pursue my dreams.
IS THERE A PLACE THAT ALWAYS HELPS YOU RECONNECT WITH YOURSELF OR SPARKS NEW IDEAS? Over the last 12 months, I have seen so many parts of South Africa. They all have a special charm. Recently, I have really loved Durban. It feels like a good place to take a break.
ARE THERE ANY NEW RELEASES OR COLLABORATIONS YOU’ RE PARTICULARLY EXCITED ABOUT? I have been working on new music for a while and will be releasing new singles this year. I have a number of exciting collaborations from spending time in Los Angeles and New York City.
WHAT LEGACY DO YOU HOPE TO LEAVE? I want to represent African RnB and Soul and redefine the way the music coming out of the continent is received and understood.
LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST GOALS? I want to keep growing while staying grounded. I believe that as I develop as a woman, I develop as an artist and entrepreneur. As my identity solidifies, so does my position as an artist and businesswoman. IB
