Retinol without the regret

Retinol is one of skincare’ s most trusted active ingredients, loved for its ability to smooth texture, soften fine lines, and support a more even-looking complexion. Used correctly, it can deliver visible results without leaving the skin irritated or overwhelmed.
ACCELERATED CELL TURNOVER Retinol has been widely regarded as the gold standard in dermatology for its ability to accelerate cellular turnover and stimulate collagen production. Founder of Beauty and Bains, Arita Bains, elaborates this as“ re-teaching” the skin to behave as it did in its youth.“ It thickens the deeper layers of the dermis, improves skin texture, and fades the appearance of fine lines. Pair it with moisture-locking botanical oils, or consider plant-derived alternatives like bakuchiol for sensitive or hyperpigmentation-prone skin.”
TOWARDS ANTI-AGEING AND WRINKLE REDUCTION Retinol is also valued for its anti-ageing benefits. According to biomedical scientist Judey Pretorius, it can improve the overall condition of prematurely aged skin.“ Retinol improves the appearance of existing wrinkles, and prevents the formation of new wrinkles. it regulates
skin cellular activity, improves the skin barrier function and assist with the normalising effect on skin pigmentation, i. e. normalises the holistic physiology of the skin.”
ENHANCED SKIN BARRIER AND FIRMNESS The effects of retinol are largely attributable to the fact that it promotes cellular growth, differentiation, and preservation of epithelial tissue, or skin cells.“ This process leads to an improved skin barrier function and assists with retaining skin moisture. As a result, skin elasticity may be improved, which can help reduce wrinkle formation.”
RADIANT SKIN AND PIGMENTATION FADE Retinol also supports collagen production, which can improve skin firmness.“ Retinol also helps to regulate oil production and keep pores clear, making it beneficial for breakout-prone skin. Over time, it can assist in fading pigmentation and promoting a more even skin tone,” says SKNlogic Development and Education Manager Natasha Delport.
MYTH Retinol increases sensitivity to the sun.
TRUTH Retinol doesn’ t increase sensitivity, but it can leave the skin vulnerable. It is best to apply it at night. IB
