WINTER SKIN
WISDOM
BY ALEK NIKOLIC
As the colder months settle in, skin can become drier, tighter, and more reactive. The secret to winter radiance is not simply richer moisturiser, but a stronger, healthier skin barrier.
However, the conversation around winter skincare has matured. Many customers are moving away from simply requesting heavier moisturisers and are beginning to understand the importance of barrier integrity. They are now asking specifically about ceramide-based formulations and peptide-rich products. As I often tell my patients, the skin barrier is the body’ s first line of defence and its functionality determines how well every other product in a routine performs.
Winter is an optimal window for professional treatments, including chemical peels and laser resurfacing, as the reduced UV exposure can support a smoother recovery period. I am particularly encouraged by the shift toward a skinfirst philosophy, with patients prioritising health over aesthetic correction and favouring restorative approaches that support the skin’ s natural function. This distinction matters clinically, as healthy, resilient skin responds better to treatment and maintenance.
Common mistakes persist, such as over-exfoliating or abandoning SPF, but the path to winter radiance is clear. Simplify your routine by focusing on foundational steps: a gentle, nonstripping cleanser, a barriersupportive moisturiser, and consistent daily sun protection.
Ultimately, winter skin health is about balance, and the goal remains the same: a resilient, hydrated, and healthy complexion. IB
