LUXURY LIVING
GOOD ARCHITECTURE SHOULD FEEL INEVITABLE, AS IF IT COULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ANYTHING ELSE.
In South Africa’ s climate, sunlight is never incidental. Concrete overhangs create shifting patterns of light and shadow throughout the day, so the house feels alive, always changing.
LIGHT, VIEWS, AND COMFORT
The fragmented floor plan allowed us to achieve two things simultaneously: capture eastern views from every room, while still inviting northern sunlight deep into the interior. The upper ground floor living areas flow onto a covered patio with levelled garden and heated lap pool.
An en-suite bedroom with adjoining lounge on the upper ground floor can function privately as a flat for the client’ s son, if needed. A central staircase leads to the upper level main bedroom, TV lounge, and second en-suite bedroom. The second bedroom can be divided in two, creating additional flexibility.
Low maintenance and energy efficiency drove every material and system decision. Finishes are simple and durable: exposed concrete, face brick, aluminium windows, and minimal external paint. Double glazing and insulated walls, floors, and roofs contribute to energy efficiency. The concrete roofs double as gutters, directing rainwater to reservoirs for re-use. A solar power system supplies 90 % of daily power needs. A borehole supplies the garden.
Luxury today means independence. Passive design and active systems like solar and water harvesting create a home that is comfortable regardless of what happens on the grid.
