ARTS AND CULTURE
BY BYRON LUKAS
FEW ARTISTS BRING TOGETHER CULTURE, COLOUR, AND GLOBAL CONFIDENCE QUITE LIKE DR ESTHER MAHLANGU. THIS AFRICA MONTH, WE HONOUR THE ICONIC NDEBELE ARTIST, WHO IS REDEFINING HERITAGE WITH HER BOLD AND UNIQUE STYLE.
Acclaimed artist Dr Esther Mahlangu’ s journey shows how she blends Ndebele cultural heritage with modern art, inspiring people around the world, while not losing sight of where she comes from.
Born in 1935 in rural Mpumalanga, Mahlangu was introduced to painting at a young age by her mother and grandmother.
Her work is deeply rooted in the visual language of the Ndebele people, recognisable for its striking geometric patterns, thick black outlines, and vivid colour palettes. Traditionally, these designs were painted on the exterior walls of homes, each pattern telling a story of identity, heritage, and pride.
