LOCAL TRAVEL
FOSSILS AND THE ANCIENT KAROO
Beneath the dust lies another layer of intrigue: the Karoo’ s prehistoric past. At the Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre, visitors can explore fossils dating back over 250 million years, from long-extinct reptiles to other creatures that roamed this ancient supercontinent. The centre’ s guides showcase the stories of the rocks around Nieu-Bethesda.
WALKS, ART, AND SLOW LIVING
One of Nieu-Bethesda’ s greatest charms is the freedom to wander – streets, studios, and trails alike. The village is peppered with quirky galleries, pottery studios, and bookstores, all curated by artists, writers, and wanderers who have settled here for inspiration or sheer delight. Hike the rolling Karoo plains or climb into the rugged folds of the Sneeuberg Mountains; every turn offers a photographic tableau of dusty roads, old farm gates, and sprawling landscapes bathed in golden light. Birdwatchers, photographers, and daydreamers alike will find plenty to marvel at.
Renowned playwright Athol Fugard bought property in the village in 1970, long before Nieu-Bethesda became a cultural curiosity. But when he penned The Road to Mecca in 1985, inspired by the life of artist Helen Martins, the village suddenly found itself on the map. Curious travellers began arriving from far and wide, eager to see the mysterious Owl House for themselves.
A VILLAGE BUILT ON WATER
Unlike many arid Karoo settlements, Nieu-Bethesda is surprisingly green. Its lifeblood is an intricate network of stone irrigation channels, or leiwater( lead water), built in the 19th century to divert mountain water into gardens and orchards. The result is a village that bursts with unexpected greenery – poplars, veggie patches, and flowering shrubs that thrive amid the otherwise dry, sunbaked plains.
DID YOU KNOW? Nieu-Bethesda was established as a church town in 1875, with the congregation first gathering on a nearby farm. The Dutch Reformed Church, consecrated in 1905, remains one of the village’ s defining landmarks.
