THE WALL PREMIERES IN LONDON On 14 July 1982, Pink Floyd’ s psychological musical drama The Wall premiered at The Empire, Leicester Square, in London. David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and Nick Mason attended the event, alongside Pete Townshend, Sting, and Queen’ s Roger Taylor, among other stars. Starring Bob Geldof of The Boomtown Rats, the film blended live-action with animation and was based on Pink Floyd’ s hit 1979 album of the same name. A commercial success on both sides of the Atlantic, The Wall later earned two BAFTA Awards and remains a cult favourite among fans of the band.

KYLIE GETS MOVING On 28 July 1987, 19-yearold Australian actress Kylie Minogue, then known best for her work in the soap opera Neighbours, released her debut single – a dance-pop version of Gerry Goffin and Carole King’ s The Loco-Motion. First recorded 25 years earlier by R & B singer Little Eva, the track quickly topped the Australian pop charts. In the US, it marked the third time that the frequently covered song had reached the Top 3. The song’ s global success led Minogue to sign with the Londonbased production trio Stock Aitken Waterman, who masterminded her debut album and helped transform her into the most successful Australian female artist of all time.

RICKY MARTIN GOES GLOBAL On 11 July 1999, Ricky Martin became the first Puerto Rican artist to top the UK pop chart with Livin’ La Vida Loca. The song dominated global airwaves, reaching No 1 in 20 countries, including the US, where it spent five weeks at the top, and Canada, where it remained in pole position for eight weeks. One of the biggest hits of the decade, Livin’ La Vida Loca was instrumental in helping Latin music cross over into the mainstream and cemented Martin’ s status as an international superstar.
