As Africa steps boldly into the era of frontier astrophysics, the Africa Millimetre Telescope( AMT) marks a defining moment in the continent’ s scientific history. As the first millimetre-wave radio telescope ever constructed on African soil, the AMT positions the continent at the forefront of global black-hole imaging and millimetre astronomy. Its integration into the Event Horizon Telescope( EHT) network will significantly sharpen the world’ s ability to produce time-resolved images of black holes, advancing our understanding of the universe.
A Global Trajectory Defined by Research Strength and Rankings Momentum
The university’ s ten catalytic niche areas— focused, amongst others, on renewable energy, biotechnology, 4IR technologies as well as space and digital innovation— now anchor more than half of its research output, ensuring that the research agenda remains intentional, development-driven and globally relevant.
UNISA’ s research prowess is further evidenced by the collaboration between itself and the University of Namibia( UNAM) on the building of the first Africa Millimetre Telescope( AMT) on the Gamsberg Mountain in Namibia.
