FROM CORAL GARDENS TO SHARK-FILLED SHOALS, SOUTH AFRICA’ S DIVE SITES ARE AS RUGGED AND DIVERSE AS THE COASTLINE ITSELF. WARM OR COLD WATERS, REEFS OR WRECKS, THERE’ S A WORLD BENEATH THE WAVES JUST WAITING TO BE EXPLORED.
South Africa’ s coastline is a diver’ s dream— a living, breathing underwater playground stretching from the warm Indian Ocean currents of KwaZulu-Natal to the cooler, kelplined shallows of Cape Town. Whether you’ re a beginner discovering your first reef or an experienced diver chasing deep-water thrills, the country’ s oceans promise unforgettable encounters.
Here’ s a journey down the coast through some of South Africa’ s most spectacular dive sites.
SODWANA BAY: CORAL KINGDOM OF THE NORTH
Nestled in northern KwaZulu-Natal, Sodwana Bay is often called the jewel of South African diving. With reefs that compare favourably with those of the Red Sea, it’ s a favourite among both locals and international visitors.
The easy-going 2 Mile Reef is ideal for both beginners and experienced divers seeking colourful coral gardens and schools of reef fish. For more advanced divers, 7 Mile Reef offers dramatic drop-offs and pelagic species, while Pinnacles and 9 Mile Reef deliver thrilling underwater topography and breathtaking biodiversity.
ALIWAL SHOAL: THE SHARK CAPITAL
Further down the KwaZulu-Natal coast lies the world-renowned Aliwal Shoal, just off the town of Umkomaas. Known for its shark encounters and rich marine ecosystems, this reef consistently ranks among the world’ s best dive destinations.
“ Raggies Cave is a popular site to dive during
June and July when it’ s the ragged-tooth sharks’ breeding season,” says Mariaan de Jongh, Marketing Manager at Aliwal Dive Centre.“ It’ s accessible to open-water divers and reaches a maximum depth of 20 metres. Another favourite is our Baited Shark Dive, available year-round, where divers often spot oceanic blacktips and, in summer, tiger and bull sharks too.”
GQEBERHA: EVANS PEAK AND BEYOND
Moving into the Eastern Cape, Gqeberha( formerly Port Elizabeth) offers pristine, less-crowded diving experiences. One of its most iconic sites is Evans Peak, located within a Marine Protected Area.
“ All of our dive sites are amazing in different and unique ways, but one of our favourites is Evans Peak,” says Kitty from Pro Dive PE.“ The reef is bursting with life— colourful corals, sea sponges, and deep gullies to explore. And because it’ s protected, only we and our customers can dive it.”
MOSSEL BAY: CHARACTER AND COLOUR ON THE GARDEN ROUTE
Along the Garden Route, Mossel Bay combines small-town charm with rich marine diversity. Dive sites here offer a mix of reef, wall, and cavern experiences, making it a versatile destination for all levels.
Phluffy Reef, discovered thanks to local fishermen and affectionately named after a dive centre owner’ s pet, is teeming with life. Butterfly Wall provides easy, scenic boat dives, while Windvogel delivers a thrilling mix of caves, canyons, and big fish encounters— with the occasional sea lion making an appearance.
