COLOUR IS KEY IN MODERN BIOPHILIC DESIGN, SHAPING HOW WE FEEL IN A SPACE. I CHOSE COLOURS INSPIRED BY THE ESTATE’ S NATURAL SURROUNDINGS AND THE HOME’ S GARDEN.

Plants are still important, but biophilic design now includes many other nature-inspired strategies to support our well-being.

See how biophilic design shapes modern living in 2026 by transforming Home Cilliers, a 1940 Irene heritage house, into a beautiful new space.
NATURE’ S PALETTE
Colour is key in modern biophilic design, shaping how we feel in a space. I chose colours inspired by the estate’ s natural surroundings and the home’ s garden.
I used natural wood, stone textures, cladding, and neutral colours to bring the outdoors in and create a warm, welcoming feel.
HARNESSING NATURAL ILLUMINATION
Lighting is another crucial element I used in this project. Natural light, in particular, has been shown to have numerous benefits for our wellbeing, including regulating circadian( sleeping) rhythms and enhancing our mood.
I also avoided cluttering the home, instead maintaining open floor plans to facilitate the flow of natural light throughout the space.
In addition to natural light, the quality and temperature of artificial lighting can also play a significant role.
BRINGING NATURE INDOORS
In my design process, the focus was on using natural materials that evoke a sense of connection to the environment. This included elements like wood, stone, natural fabrics, and, but not only, plants / flowers.
Natural materials not only add aesthetic value but also contribute to the sensory richness of a space. For instance, the texture of the wooden floors, the cooler“ touch” of the stone countertops, or the softness of the voile curtains in the main bedroom engage the senses and create a more immersive and comforting home.
