ARTS AND CULTURE
“ Two people can hear the same case and reach completely different conclusions.”

Theatre has always asked audiences to suspend disbelief. But The Jury Experience takes that idea a step further by making spectators part of the story.

Created by Fever, the global live-entertainment discovery platform, the production transforms a traditional night at the theatre into a 65-minute courtroom drama in which the audience serves as the jury.
Rather than sitting quietly and waiting for the final curtain, attendees are handed a responsibility that can make the experience surprisingly personal: deciding the fate of the accused.
The case unfolds through witness testimonies, crossexaminations, and evidence presented by the actors. Audience members cast votes at key moments before delivering their final verdict.
And that is where things get really interesting. There is rarely a simple answer. Just as in real life, evidence can be interpreted differently, emotions can influence judgement, and two people can hear the same case and reach completely different conclusions.
THIS IS A DIFFERENT KIND OF THEATRE In an era when audiences are increasingly looking for experiences rather than passive
entertainment, The Jury Experience taps into the growing popularity of immersive theatre.
The format also makes it particularly relevant for October, a month when audiences are naturally drawn towards stories involving mystery, crime, suspense, and moral dilemmas. But this is more than a Halloween-style thrill.
The production challenges audiences to think about justice, responsibility, and the consequences of our decisions. Cases can explore issues ranging from emerging technology to personal responsibility, encouraging spectators to look beyond the obvious answer.
By the time the final vote arrives, the atmosphere has shifted. What started as entertainment suddenly feels like a decision that matters.
WHERE JUSTICE MEETS CULTURE In Cape Town, the production is staged at the Star Theatre in the District Six Museum’ s Homecoming Centre, a heritage building used for performances and public programmes. In Johannesburg, it moves to the John Kani Theatre at The Market Theatre, one of the country’ s most historically significant performing arts institutions
For theatre lovers, true-crime fans, or anyone looking for something different to do this October, The Jury Experience offers an opportunity to swap the usual night out for something more interactive.
Just remember: when the verdict is finally called, there is no hiding behind the person next to you.
The jury is you. IB
