ON MONAGHAN FARM, A PRIVATE 245-HECTARE ECO-ESTATE LOCATED IN LANSERIA, GAUTENG PROVINCE, SOUTH AFRICA, VELD ARCHITECTS TRANSFORMS A BRIEF FROM TWIN SISTERS WITH DISTINCT TASTES INTO A HOME THAT SERVES AS BOTH SHELTER AND STATEMENT.

The most compelling projects often begin with a contradiction. The clients, twin sisters building a shared home after years apart, presented a brief with conflicting requirements. One wanted a series of pavilions that interacted with the landscape; the other preferred a strong, minimalist structure.

A sculptural object situated in the land. Their site, a sunken part of the Monaghan Farm eco-estate overlooking the Jukskei River, presented its own challenges. The architecture would need a specific and thoughtful relationship with this preserved natural environment.
The solution was based on a principle from Frank Lloyd Wright:“ The mother art is architecture.” Instead of viewing the building as a mere container for their art collection, we integrated their appreciation for art into the structure itself, creating a home that responds to two personalities while mediating between the building and the landscape.
