DELEGATES DO NOT SIMPLY ATTEND A CONGRESS IN LUANDA; THEY ENGAGE WITH A DESTINATION THAT FEELS NEW, CULTURALLY RICH AND DYNAMIC.
A LATE-MOVER ADVANTAGE
While Angola may have entered the MICE conversation later than some of its African peers, this has allowed the African country to be deliberate with its moves.“ We are not adapting outdated infrastructure or legacy systems; we are building with today’ s international standards and tomorrow’ s expectations in mind,” says Julia Kleber, CEO of the internationally operating PR and communications agency, The Kleber Group.
As a late mover, Angola is in the unique position to leapfrog from a new international airport designed for global traffic, to purpose-built convention infrastructure and a Convention Bureau structured from day one as a public – private partnership.“ This gives us flexibility, speed and alignment,” says Kleber. The focus on accessibility is complemented by a clear political commitment to reducing bureaucracy, simplifying licensing processes for tourism and event-related businesses.”
And as she highlights, Angola is not competing on volume.“ Instead, we are positioning Angola for high-value, content-driven congresses and curated events looking for fresh destinations, strong governmental support and a sense of discovery.”
A HIGH-VALUE, EXPERIENCE-LED MICE DESTINATION
Beyond capacity and connectivity, Angola offers advantages that few destinations can match: visa-free entry for travellers from 98 countries, including direct links from Europe via major international airlines.“ Arriving in Angola is straightforward and efficient,” explains Kleber.“ This level of accessibility lowers entry barriers for international delegates and establishes a strong foundation for successful events from the outset.”
Angola offers visitors and delegates a vibrant cultural scene, distinctive gastronomy and largely undiscovered landscapes that will transform meetings into immersive experiences that clearly differentiate Angola from more established MICE destinations.
As Kleber puts it, delegates do not simply attend a congress in Luanda; they engage with a destination that feels new, culturally rich, and dynamic.“ This integration of MICE with destination storytelling drives stronger delegate engagement, higher attendance motivation and longer stays.”
WHAT’ S NEXT...
Over the next five years, Kelber expects Angola’ s MICE sector to deliver benefits well beyond visitor numbers. The impact will be felt in skills development, among other things – from event management and hospitality to technical production, logistics and multilingual services. It will also drive knowledge transfer through international congresses in fields such as energy, infrastructure, health, education and innovation. At the same time, local value creation will grow as SMEs, creative industries and service providers become integrated into the wider MICE supply chain.
Says Kleber:“ Our ambition is for MICE to act as a catalyst supporting employment, professionalisation, and Angola’ s integration into global knowledge networks while reinforcing tourism as a sustainable pillar of economic diversification. IB
