AUTOMOTIVE

BYD South Africa – an industry leader in electronics, automotives, renewable energy, and rail transit – has swiftly positioned itself as a key player in the country. With a clear mandate to drive South Africa’ s shift to clean, sustainable mobility, the company – under MD Steve Chang – is focused not only on introducing electric and hybrid vehicles but also on expanding its dealer network, addressing infrastructure gaps, and educating consumers on the future of transport.

In a recent conversation with Inbound SA, Chang highlighted BYD SA’ s growth trajectory and its vision for the local market.“ In just over two years since our official launch, we’ ve built a strong foundation, with a committed team of just under 50 people and a clear focus on delivering affordable, high-quality EVs to South African consumers,” he says.
A milestone moment came on 4 December 2025, when BYD SA unveiled the Sealion 5 at a high-profile launch event in Muldersdrift. The launch signals the company’ s intent to expand its model lineup and cater to a growing appetite for versatile, locally accessible electric vehicles.
EXPANDING BEYOND CITY LIMITS
While BYD initially focused on urban markets, it quickly recognised that demand for EVs extends beyond metropolitan areas. The company is now actively growing its dealer footprint nationwide, ensuring that South Africans in smaller towns and regional hubs can access EVs and the support infrastructure required for adoption.
Chang emphasises that BYD’ s growth is not just about vehicles:“ We’ re committed to enabling a full ecosystem for electric mobility – charging infrastructure, service support, and consumer education are all part of the journey toward sustainable transport in South Africa.”
“ We have a very aggressive dealer network expansion underway,” says Chang.“ People in rural areas, especially in farming communities,

“ WE’ RE NOT JUST OFFERING A CAR – WE’ RE OFFERING A COMPLETE ECOSYSTEM FOR MOBILITY THAT ANSWERS THE NEEDS OF SOUTH AFRICAN CONSUMERS.”

are eager to buy EVs. These communities already use solar panels and energy storage systems, so it’ s a natural next step for them to move towards battery electric vehicles( BEVs) and plug-in hybrids.”
He highlights the growing demand for EVs outside traditional urban hubs, with farmers and rural residents pushing for more local access to clean mobility options.“ It’ s exciting to see the shift towards EVs outside the cities,” he adds. This expansion strategy includes opening new dealerships in these underserved areas, ensuring that electric vehicles are accessible to all citizens, regardless of location.
Each new model launch, says Chang, is a project that represents the passion of the BYD team.“ Every model we bring to market is like a baby to us,” he says.“ BYD is the only company truly developing the new energy vehicle market. Before we entered the space, there was little focus on electric and hybrid vehicles.”
