South Africa’ s infrastructure landscape tells a tale of two realities. On one side, we have seen the consequences of decades of deferred maintenance. At the same time, we’ ve witnessed the emerging green shoots of a fundamentally different approach to asset management.
The year has highlighted the high stakes of infrastructure management. In the North West province, asset management deteriorated so severely that it escalated from a service delivery issue into a human rights concern. This dire situation underscores a core principle in the asset management sector: if you allow infrastructure to deteriorate long enough, you reach a point where replacement becomes cheaper than repair.
