• Export compliance is strengthened through verified, tamper-proof data.
• Disease response is faster and more accurate, enabling the efficient containment of outbreaks.
These capabilities are crucial for maintaining market confidence and meeting international standards as South Africa seeks to expand its presence in global meat exports.
ENHANCED BIOSECURITY TOOLS
In light of recent FMD outbreaks, RMIS has added features to improve visibility and outbreak management:
• A public FMD case map showing confirmed incidents, available at rmis. co. za / diseaseincidents
• Automatic WhatsApp alerts for registered users within a 10km radius of an outbreak
These innovations provide farmers and stakeholders with timely access to vital information, enabling quicker containment and better coordination across regions.
INTRODUCING THE RMIS MOVEMENT APP
To promote inclusivity, RMIS introduced the RMIS Movement App, a free mobile tool designed for producers not yet using digital livestock systems. The app enables any registered production unit to log livestock movements directly from its GLN.
Focused solely on movement tracking, the app offers an accessible entry point for small-scale and emerging farmers.
SUPPORTING THE RED MEAT INDUSTRY VISION 2030
The RMIS traceability platform supports the Red Meat Industry Strategy 2030, which seeks to modernise and digitise the sector for global competitiveness.
“ Traceability could be the most impactful initiative the livestock industry has seen since South Africa became a net exporter of red meat,” says Dewald Olivier, RMIS Chief Executive Officer.“ When integrated with grading and other initiatives, this platform will unlock the industry’ s full potential.”
A COLLABORATIVE STEP FORWARD
The platform’ s success depends on collaboration throughout the value chain – from small-scale producers to exporters and regulators. RMIS continues to work closely with these stakeholders to ensure the system is practical, inclusive, and aligned with international best practices.
With phase 2 now underway, South Africa’ s red meat sector is positioned for a future characterised by transparency, efficiency, and trust – essential elements for sustaining growth, maintaining biosecurity, and strengthening the country’ s role in the global protein market. IB
