Congratulations to the Woodland
Hills Academy fifth grade students that
competed in the National Geographic
Geo Challenge Regional Competition in
Harrisburg on April 6, 2018. The B.A.M.
(Beluga’s Aid to Migration) Team (Raven
Dean, Lillian Divelbiss, Ethan Emter, and
Owen Phillips) were named the overall
regional champions. The S.T.O.P. (Synthetic
Tusk Operation Pill) Team (Isabella Caldwell,
Carmella DeVore, Lena Laubscher, Leila
Nestico, and Isabele Wilson) were given the
award for Best Teamwork. Over 900 teams
from across the United States competed in
the first phase of the Geo Challenge. Seventy
teams from across the country, including
the two Academy teams, were selected
to compete in six regional competitions
in Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Illinois, Texas,
Colorado, and California. Six National
Champions were chosen, including the
Woodland Hills BAM team, at the Regional
Competitions. Students from Pennsylvania,
New York, and New Jersey competed at
the regional competition in Pennsylvania.
They had to select a migratory species that
had an obstacle to its migration. Then they
had to map the migratory route and where
the obstacles were, develop a model of a
solution to the obstacle, generate a call to
action, and present it via a video production
in the preliminary round and a live
performance at the regional competition.
The Woodland Hills Academy teams helped
to save Beluga Whales and Mali Elephants.
They used a portion of their prize money to
make donations to foundations that help
to save both species. Both teams proudly
represented the Woodland Hills School
District at this national event!
