According to studies at Johns Hopkins University, students lose an average of 2.6 months of math skills during the summer months. Additionally, research shows that the average teacher spends four to six weeks of time re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the long summer break. Think Through Math( TTM) can help students avoid“ summer learning loss” by working on a carefully selected set of topics designed to help them maintain the math skills they gained during the school year. Using TTM in the summer also prepares students for the topics they will see when the new school year begins.
Over the summer, TTM offered two challenges to motivate students to continue working on their math skills during their time off. Woodland Hills is home to two of the big winners of these

challenges. Tommy Bellows’ family pledged to motivate him to complete at least five lessons over the summer. Tommy and his family were rewarded with a $ 50 Amazon gift card for focusing on math during the summer months and surpassing his goal.
The big winner was Angela Zhang, who took part in the“ Summer Math Splash THINK Challenge.” Held from mid-June to August,“ Summer Math Splash THINK Challenge” called upon students from across the country to work on their math skills so that they could hit the ground running in the fall. Angela completed and passed 49 math lessons during the summer months.
On September 13, 2016, Lisa Wise, the Motivation Manager from Think Through Math, visited The Woodland Hills Academy to present Tommy and Angela with their prizes. Tommy received a t-shirt in addition to his gift card.

Angela received the grand prize— a solar-powered backpack to carry a new Fire Tablet, a TTM t-shirt, pencils, and a journal. TTM offers monthly challenges to motivate students— we hope to host many more award ceremonies this year!
More than 2.6 million students in over 17,000 schools across the country currently use TTM as part of their math curriculum. The program features rigorous learning goals, adaptive technology that meets the needs of each individual student, and online math teachers who create a custom experience for each student. Think Through Math has an embedded incentive program that motivates students as they solve math problems, as well as a charitable giving feature that allows students to convert their points into donations to select charities.
