WHHS SENIOR WINS TOP NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP
Katherine Green from Woodland Hills High School was one of the 25 National Honor Society Scholarship finalists out of more than 13,000 applicants . She won a $ 5,625 scholarship .
The National Honor Society ( NHS ) is awarding $ 2 million in scholarships to 600 NHS students . The program is supported by NHS ’ s parent organization , the National Association of Secondary School Principals ( NASSP ), which also administers the National Student Council .
The scholarships recognize students who exemplify the four pillars of NHS membership : scholarship , service , leadership and character .
Katie Green is an exceptional student leader who embodies the spirit of community service . Throughout the pandemic , she launched a unique chalk art project that brought neighbors together and lifted their spirits during a time of social isolation . This initiative earned her an invitation to be an artist at a districtwide event .
Katie is an accomplished leader , serving on her mock trial team , Green Team , and participating in youth climate action summits . She has also developed skills in scriptwriting , editing , and production as part of the teen-led Bridges & Books podcast , which features RADcast segments highlighting cultural and artistic organizations .
As a tutor in the peer writing center at her high school , Katie has shown her dedication to helping others achieve their academic goals . She has also volunteered her time and talents in various capacities ,
including on stage crews for multiple shows , guiding school events , and participating in voter registration efforts and blood drives .
Katie ’ s passion for community service extends beyond her hometown , as she is part of the Gene Kelly Critics program and the Pittsburgh Youth Media Corps . She is also a member of the Interact Club Regional Board of Directors and the Pittsburgh Youth Climate Council , further demonstrating her commitment to making a positive impact on the world .
She said , “ Winning this scholarship has helped me recognize that the things I do may seem small , but they make a big difference to my school and community .”
BEAUTIFUL ROSES !
The Pittsburgh Rose Society , in cooperation with the Mt . Lebanon Public Library , will host its 2023 Rose Show from 1 to 4 p . m . on Saturday , June 10 , at the library , 16 Castle Shannon Boulevard in Mt . Lebanon . This event is free and open to the public , all ages .
The Rose Show will be held under the auspices of the American Rose Society ( ARS ) with growers displaying their finest rose specimens in various classes . ARScertified horticulture judges will review all entries by strict standards and award top prizes . The superior hybrid tea rose will be awarded the coveted “ Queen of the Show ” title .

MCDONALD ’ S MAC GRANTS HELP MAKE ACTIVITIES COUNT IN COMMUNITY MIDDLE SCHOOLS
Local McDonald ’ s restaurants are offering MAC Grants to help area middle school teachers Make Activities Count for their students .
McDonald ’ s recognizes that lessons often become more meaningful when demonstrated with hands-on experiences . The MAC Grants program provides financial support so teachers can supplement regular classroom curriculum with activities the school ’ s budget may not allow .
Since the program ’ s inception 29 years ago , McDonald ’ s restaurants have awarded more than $ 3.3 million to support local teachers who want to provide hands-on learning activities in their classrooms .
Fifth , sixth , seventh and eighth grade teachers may apply for grants of up to $ 500 for interesting and educational projects . Past recipients have energized a literature lesson by building English castles replete with turrets , created an in-school store to facilitate lessons about money handling , and grew hydroponic tomatoes during science class . Because McDonald ’ s leaves the options open to the teachers , project ideas are limitless .
