Academic Scholarships Break All Records
By: Joyce Fratangelo
Upon entering the Junior Senior High School, one can’ t help but notice the Woodland Hills Wall of Gold. The Wall of Gold displays most of the academic scholarships, large and small, earned by this year’ s senior class. At this writing( April 20th), the class of 2017 had broken all previous graduating class records with scholarships totaling an impressive $ 3,750,576! Each brick in the wall recognizes a student, the scholarship award, and the college, university, or program from which the scholarship is given. Each academic scholarship is the result of years of strong academic performance on the part of the individual student, and a testimony to the strong academic programs provided by the teachers in the Woodland Hills Junior Senior High School.
The Wall of Gold is“ built” each year by the College and Career Access Center. Students, especially seniors, use the center to receive assistance in career exploration, college searches and tours, the college application process, and completion of financial aid / scholarship forms. Other student accomplishments to date in the College and Career Center include, but are not limited to: 490 one-to-one career / college counseling sessions; 180 Free Application for Federal Student Aid( FAFSA) completions; 580 completed college applications with over 320 acceptance letters; 280 students visiting 10 postsecondary campuses; and over 2400 in-class and after school tutoring sessions. Overall, Woodland Hills students in grades 7-12 have benefited from more than 10,600 services provided through the College and Career Access Center during the 2016-2017 school year.
