The Wolverines Take on Shakespeare
BY REID BURNES
O
n Monday, February 4, and Friday, February
8, students from Woodland Hills Jr/Sr High
School and the Woodland Hills Academy
participated in the Pittsburgh Public Theater’s
annual Shakespeare Monologue
and Scene Contest. Last year,
the contest hosted over 1,000
participants from over 90 nearby
schools during the preliminary
round. This round ends in a cut
to the finals which is comprised
of a dozen monologues and
scenes from grades 8 through 12,
and another dozen from grades
4 through 7. Finalists are
selected by a panel of judges
made up of professional
Shakespearean scholars
and actors. Coached by Mr.
Burnes, Mr. Laret, and Ms.
Pearson, Woodland Hills has
been well-represented in the
finals. Over the past six years,
Woodland Hills students have participated in the finals
five times, with one student winning the upper division
monologue contest during those years. Many more
students have been recognized
with honorable mentions.
This year’s students worked
tirelessly to live up to that
legacy, and each one left
everything they had on
the stage. The preliminary
round ended on February
15 and were announced on
Pittsburgh Public Theater’s
website. The list of finalists
was not available at the
time of this writing. The
Showcase of Finalists will
be held on February 18
at the O’Reilly Theater
with free admission
to the public. To all
of our students that
participated, break a leg!
