Programs at the Area Public Libraries Fall 2017 Carnegie Free Library of Swissvale 1800 Monongahela Ave • Swissvale, PA 15218 412.731.2300 swissvalelibrary.org SEPTEMBER IS LOVE YOUR LIBRARY MONTH! All donations made to the Friends of the Library during the month of September will be matched, thanks to a generous grant. The Friends have many ways that you can contribute including shopping at the Friends Book and Bake Sale (last weekend in September), contributing for a book to honor or memorialize someone (forms at the desk), buying a cookie or ornament from the tree at the front desk and simply making a contribution. Remember, all donations for the month of September will be matched! LIBRARY 100th BIRTHDAY ACTIVITIES CONTINUE The next birthday activity will be a PICNIC!—to be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, from noon to 2 p.m. Friends of the Library will provide hotdogs and drinks, and you are invited to bring a delicious potluck dish. Games will follow. If you like, bring something – or several somethings – for our Trading Table. “BOOK BUCKS” “Book Bucks” begins on the day after Labor Day. If you can read—and there is no age limit—stop by for a form, and begin keeping track of your books. In May we hold our incredible Auction with over 100 items to bid on—with our special currency, “Book Bucks”. LITT LE LISTENERS Read to your young ones, and when they turn in lists of 15 books they listened to, they will receive prizes! Plus – and way more important than prizes – research shows that being read to helps young children develop language skills that support their learning for the rest of their lives. HERE A WIZARD, THERE A WIZARD The WIZARD TOURNAMENT starts up again Sept. 16. New players of all ages are always welcome. You can learn the rules quickly—if not the strategy—and everyone goes home with a weekly prize. Questions? Ask Bonnie. COMPUTER, TABLET, KINDLE AND SMARTPHONE TUTORING FOR YOU Computer tutor Carolyn Luck is here on Tuesdays. Would you like to register for a half hour session? It’s free, and you will gain confidence and new skills! HEALTH FAIR Our third annual Health Fair will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on McClure Avenue from Monongahela Avenue to Monroe Street. Over the past two years, the Health Fair included more than 30 health providers, and attracted over 200 community residents who took part in health screenings, workshops and exercise classes. We are expecting another great year! The day’s activities will include Zumba, Yoga, line dancing, personal training demonstration, children’s activities and ATU’s Health Food Truck. Everything is free except for the food. The health fair is presented by Reach Up, Inc. Family Wellness Center, the Swissvale Library and the University of Pittsburgh Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI). FRIENDS BOOK AND BAKE SALE It happens from Thursday, Sept. 28 through Saturday, Sept. 30. Delicious baked goods and wonderful bargain books. Plus, all the money raised goes toward a matching grant for the Friends. Shop, eat and support the Friends of the Library—all at the same time! ARE YOU FEELING COLORFUL? Join instructor Deborah Hazuza’s adult coloring class to learn the basics of blending, burnishing, shading and layering. This is as stress-free class with no pressure or deadlines. The group usually meets at the library on the second Tuesday of each month, from 6 to 8 p.m. Call to verify date, as it sometimes changes. ARE YOU A READING ADULT?
