INDUSTRY INSIGHT BETTER HEARING SPONSORED CONTENT Having a difficult time understanding a telephone conversation? Now read it! A dults with hearing loss may be able to receive help using the phone by qualifying for a captioning telephone. Captioning phones are assistive listening telephones that provide captions along with enhanced sound. Captioning telephones work like a standard phone for the user but connect to the internet to gather captions of words spoken by the individual on the other end of the line. The captions are displayed on the base of the phone near the receiver. The service is paid for by a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fund that fulfills a mandate of the Americans with Disabilities Act to provide functionally equivalent communication for those with hearing loss. Delivery and installation of the device are also free. Captioned phones are a great service for anyone with a measurable hearing loss. For those with a hearing loss, talking on a standard phone can be difficult, leading to isolation and social withdrawal. Captioned phones, by showing the lines of speech on a screen, make it much easier to fully understand someone on the other end of the line. To find out if you or a loved one can qualify for this phone, please contact your audiologist. HearWell Center in Forest Hills is proud to provide patients with services needed to obtain the phones. Please call HearWell Center to learn more or stop by to see some demo phones. This Industry Insight was written by Dr. Suzanne Yoder, Au.D.
