WHAT’S NEWS IN WEST MIFFLIN VFW Post 914 Intrepid West Mifflin Commander Jake Bradich and Quartermaster Gary Ruston gave recognition medals and $100 each to local winners of the annual Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen contests at the post’s meeting on Nov. 29. This year’s scholarship awardees are Mariah Lewis for the Patriot’s Pen, and Tyler Krajacic, Jenny Rohach and Elena Piel for the Voice of Democracy competition. WEST MIFFLIN VFW POST 914 ANNOUNCES YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS, AWARDS $400 All-American Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 Intrepid West Mifflin has selected four West Mifflin students as winners for this year’s Voice of Democracy (VOD) and Patriot’s Pen contests. Recipients received a total of $400 in prize money, and each has a chance at more through additional competition. Garnering high honors for this year’s VOD competition are Tyler Krajacic, Jenny Rohach and Elena Piel from West Mifflin Area High School. Mariah Lewis of West Mifflin Area Middle School won the top prize for the post’s Patriot’s Pen scholarship. Additionally, a $100 prize and a VFW medal were awarded to the post’s Patriot’s Pen winner. The topic for this year’s VOD essay contest was “Why My Vote Matters.” Competitors for the Patriot’s Pen wrote on the theme of “Why I Honor the American Flag.” All of the VOD candidates will move to the next level of competition to be held at Pittsburgh’s VFW District 29. If advanced, entrants will earn a chance to compete at the VFW Department of Pennsylvania. Succeeding there, winners will then vie at the national level, where the top award includes a $30,000 scholarship. In all, VFW Post 914 received 33 essays for this year’s VOD competition, and 10 more for Patriot’s Pen.
