Subscribe to Town Hall South, which began in 1969 and features five lectures that are held in the Upper St. Clair High School theater from 10:10‑11:10 a.m. For the 2019-2020 season, the exciting array of speakers are: Oct. 1 – Lou Holtz, legendary football coach, ESPN sports analyst and renowned motivational speaker Nov. 5 – Beth Macy, award-winning journalist with a focus on social problems including the opioid crisis Dec. 3 – Alan Zwiebel, Emmy Award- winning comedy writer including for “Saturday Night Live” Feb. 4 – Vijay Gupta, violinist/educator/ mental health advocate March 17 – Lynsey Addario, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, focusing on War, Injustice, Resilience and Humanity In addition to the formal lecture, an optional luncheon at St. Clair Country Club is held immediately following where the speaker is available to answer questions posed by the luncheon audience, which frequently leads to a very candid exchange! SOUTH HILLS SENIOR SOFTBALL LOOKING FOR MEMBERS The South Hills Senior Softball League announces that registration is open for its 2019 season. The league is for players 55 years old and up. (Players who are 6 724.942.0940 TO ADVERTISE ❘ 54 can join at any time during the year they turn 55.) Information and forms for registration are on the league’s website at seniorsoftballleague.com. The league holds practices and games from April through August/early September at fields in South Park and elsewhere in the South Hills. “You’ll feel like a kid again when you play,” says Doug Houston, commissioner of the nonprofit group. “The average player is about 66, and our softball rules are age-appropriate.” Players are chosen for teams each spring in a draft, ensuring that talent is spread more or less evenly among the teams. The league holds a catered picnic at the end of each season. Players come from all over the area, including Baldwin, Bethel Park, Bridgeville, Carnegie, Castle Shannon, Chartiers Valley, Dormont, Mt. Lebanon, Peters Township, South Park, Upper St. Clair, Whitehall and other communities.
