CASANOVA MALE BEAUTY PAGEANT Marcus Martin Jim Popa WEST MIFFLIN’S MARTIN AND POPA INCLUDED IN 2018 NFF HAMPSHIRE HONOR SOCIETY The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame announced the members of the 2018 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers. An all-time high 1,271 players from a record 307 schools qualified for membership in the society’s 12th year. West Mifflin graduates Marcus Martin and Jim Popa were among those added to the society. Both attended Slippery Rock University. Martin has already received an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship from the NFF and Fidelity Investments for his appointment to the 13-member National Scholar Athlete Class of 2018, an announcement that was made in January. “We are pleased to see another record number of athletes honored by the Hampshire Honor Society this year,” said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. “Over the past decade, it has become a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these 8 724.942.0940 TO ADVERTISE ❘ young men for their commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives.” The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF’s National Scholar- Athlete program by greatly expanding the number of scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year. The program further strengthens the organization’s leadership role in encouraging academic performance by the student-athletes at the 777 colleges and universities with football programs nationwide. The 1,271 players honored in 2018 sets a new high-water mark, eclipsing the previous record of 1,103 honorees in 2017. The 307 schools with members breaks the previous year’s mark of 302. The initiative has now honored 9,014 student-athletes since its inception, and the program has experienced growth every year in either members or school participation since its launch in 2007. Eighteen schools had at least 10 honorees in 2018, including Ashland (Ohio), Brown, Butler, Central (Iowa), Dartmouth, Hobart (N.Y.), Johns Hopkins (Md.), Kalamazoo (Mich.), Macalester (Minn.), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.), Redlands (Calif.), Rose-Hulman (Ind.), St. Thomas (Minn.), Wartburg (Iowa), Washington & Jefferson (Pa.), Washington U. (Mo.) and Yale. “We have honored more than 9,000 student-athletes in the last 12 years thanks to Jon Hanson’s generosity,” said icmags.com “Who’s Your Candyman” was the theme of the 2018 West Mifflin Male Beauty Pageant, where contestants competed in dancing, casual wear, beach wear, formal wear and more. The field was Ray Englert narrowed in a final question round that eliminated everyone but the winner. The victor of the 2018 contest was Ray Englert. HEALTH DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES INCOME GUIDELINES INCREASE FOR WIC PROGRAM The Allegheny County Health Department announced that income guidelines for the PA Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Food and Nutrition Program has increased.
