Thomas Jefferson High School Students Earn National Merit Recognitions
Thomas Jefferson High School senior Reagan Sanderson has been named one of just 16,000 national semifinalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program .
National Merit Semifinalists now must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition . Approximately 95 % of semifinalists will reach finalist standing , according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation . Finalists will then be eligible to compete for more than 6,800 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $ 26 million this spring . Half of the finalists should win a scholarship , earning the Merit Scholar title , according to the corporation .
Thomas Jefferson High School students Jesse Mellor and James Hausman have been named Commended Students in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program .
34,000 students from across the country have been recognized as Commended Students for their academic promise and placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the competition by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test ( PSAT / NMSQT ).
2025 marks the 70th year for the National Merit Scholarship program .
Thomas Jefferson High School Receives AP Distinction
Thomas Jefferson High School , part of the West Jefferson Hills School District , has once again earned a spot on the AP School Honor Roll . The AP School Honor Roll celebrates schools with AP programs that are delivering results for students . Schools are named to the AP School Honor Roll for their efforts and results of increasing college-going culture , providing opportunities for students to earn college credit , and maximizing college readiness . For the 2023-2024 school year , Thomas Jefferson High School earned the silver level of distinction .
To earn a spot on the AP School Honor Roll , 40 % or more of the graduating class must have taken at least one AP Exam during high school , 25 % or more of the graduating class must have scored a three or higher on at least one AP Exam during high school , and 2 % of the graduating class must have taken five or more AP exams during high school with at least one taking place in ninth or tenth grades .
51 % of the Thomas Jefferson High School Class of 2024 took at least one AP exam at some point in their high school career . 38 % of TJ 2024 graduates scored a three or higher on any AP exam and may have qualified for college credits . 19 % of the Class of 2024
took five or more AP Exams in high school with at least one taken in their ninth or tenth grade years .
Thomas Jefferson High School also received the AP Access Award for its work providing all students the opportunity to participate in AP courses , including students of underrepresented populations .
In spring 2024 , a school-record 290 Thomas Jefferson High School students were enrolled in AP courses . A school-record 208 TJ students earned a score of 3 or higher . TJ also set another school record when 257 students took AP Exams in the spring of 2024 . A total of 44 students earned AP Scholars distinctions in 2023-2024 .
