genetic factors , disease or injury .
Q : What is a cataract ? A : A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside your eye . This lens , located behind the iris ( colored part of the eye ), works like the lens of a camera – focusing light images on the retina , which sends images to the brain . When a cataract forms , this lens can become so clouded it prevents light and images from reaching the retina . Most cataracts are the result of aging , though some form as a result of
Q : How can cataracts affect my vision ? A : As cataracts progress , images are not as clear and crisp as they once were . It may feel as if you are looking through a foggy or dusty car windshield .
Q : What are the symptoms of a cataract ?
A : Symptoms include blurry or cloudy vision , bright colors appear faded or dull , headlights or streetlights have glare or halos , trouble seeing well at night , sensitivity to bright light , needing more light when you read , double vision in one eye , or frequent prescription changes in your eyeglasses or contact lenses .
Q : How is a cataract treated ? A : The only effective treatment for cataracts is surgery . Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded natural lens and replacing it with a clear artificial lens . The artificial lens , also called an intraocular lens ( IOL ), is positioned in the same place as your natural lens . It remains a permanent part of your eye .
Q : What is the difference between traditional cataract surgery and laser cataract surgery ?
A : In traditional cataract surgery , the surgeon makes small incisions in the cornea by hand with a scalpel , then creates a round opening in the capsule , where the natural lens sits in the eye , with a surgical instrument to allow access to the natural lens . In LenSx ®, the surgeon utilizes a bladeless , femtosecond laser to make the incisions in the cornea , the round opening in the capsule , and to soften the cataract for removal . LenSx ® provides the surgeon with the precise location , size and depth of incisions by use of high-resolution imaging .
Q : What are the new technology lenses available and what will they do for me ?
A : AIO offers a variety of new technology intraocular lenses ( IOLs ) that are designed to correct a range of vision — near , intermediate and far — as well as astigmatism to reduce the need for glasses after surgery . IOLs are now designed with your active lifestyle in mind , from reading books and viewing mobile devices , to seeing computer screens and the dash of your car , as well as seeing street signs and your TV clearly with visual independence from glasses and contacts . These lenses include PanOptix ®, PanOptix ® Toric , Vivity ® and Vivity ® Toric , all of which significantly reduce the need for glasses after surgery .
