$ 324,000 IN EDUCATION EQUITY GRANTS TO SCHOOLS
State Senator Pam Iovino announced that $ 324,211 in education equity grants will go to two Career and Technical Centers ( CTCs ), two public school districts , an intermediate unit , and a charter school in the 37th Senatorial District . The grants are intended to enhance education access and inclusion for students during the COVID-19 pandemic . Grant funding comes from the Governor ’ s Emergency Education Relief ( GEER ) funds , part of Pennsylvania ’ s CARES Act allocation .

District includes : Parkway West CTC – $ 120,650 Steel Center for Career and Technical
Education – $ 117,361 Fort Cherry School District – $ 28,800 Carlynton School District – $ 21,500 Allegheny Intermediate Unit – $ 18,250 Propel Charter School ( Montour ) –
$ 17,650
The grants to Fort Cherry and Carlynton school districts , Allegheny Intermediate Unit , and Propel Charter School are part of a $ 13 million allocation of Continuity of Education Equity Grants ( CEEG ) for the 2020- 21 academic year . This funding may be used to purchase computer equipment , such as laptops , tablets , and internet hotspots , or may be used toward providing instructional materials , such as paper lessons and coursework . Schools with the highest percentage of students lacking access to resources were given priority in receiving these grants .
The two CTC grants are part of a $ 10.5 million statewide package of CTC Equity Grants to support effective continuity of education programs such as summer and other expanded programming , and industry credential assessments for
students enrolled in CTCs that have been negatively impacted by COVID-19 mitigation efforts .
All of these education equity grants come from GEER funds , which the CARES Act authorizes governors to distribute at their discretion . Eligible GEER uses include the purchasing of protective equipment , hand sanitizer / cleaning products , equipment or technology for remote instruction , and digital health apps to assist in contact tracing and monitoring of students , as well as installation of barriers or other protective devices in facilities .

Weekly free coffee offer is intended to maintain social distancing amid pandemic .
Sheetz announced a new holiday coffee program to keep customers and employees safe this holiday season . To maintain social distancing as the pandemic continues , Sheetz will offer customers one free selfserve coffee every week during December and January .
Available at all of Sheetz ’ s 614 store locations across Pennsylvania , Maryland , Virginia , West Virginia , North Carolina and Ohio , the program officially launched Nov . 27 , and the free coffee offer will be uploaded to each MySheetz cardholder ’ s account each Friday during the months of December and January until Jan . 22 , 2021 . Each coffee will be redeemable for one week after it is uploaded to the cardholder ’ s account .
In previous years , Sheetz celebrated the holidays by offering customers a free cup of freshly brewed coffee on Christmas Day , New Year ’ s Eve and New Year ’ s Day . To eliminate large crowds and gatherings at its stores , Sheetz has implemented this special holiday coffee program .

412 FOOD RESCUE REACHES MAJOR MILESTONE : PREVENTING 10 MILLION POUNDS OF GOOD FOOD FROM GOING TO LANDFILLS
Launched in March 2015 to tackle the interconnected problems of food waste and hunger , 412 Food Rescue recently celebrated a major milestone : 10 million pounds of food rescued .
That ’ s the amount of good food that the tech nonprofit has prevented from being wasted by redirecting it to households in poverty and nonprofits serving food-insecure populations in western Pennsylvania . Since the spring , 412 Food Rescue has also rapidly adapted its operations to respond to emergency food needs created by the COVID-19 pandemic .
Focusing on the logistical challenges of retail food recovery , where 40 percent of food waste occurs , 412 Food Rescue uses its eponymous app to coordinate a flexible network of volunteer food recovery drivers , called Food Rescue Heroes , who pick up surplus food from grocery stores and restaurants and deliver it to the places where it is most needed . 412 Food Rescue works with 800 food retailers , 600 nonprofit partners and over 12,000 volunteer drivers in the Pittsburgh area alone .
In March , 412 Food Rescue began pivoting to help those hardest-hit by the pandemic and its economic fallout in western Pennsylvania . It launched a home delivery service , and was recognized by Fast Company magazine with a World
