GILL HALL ELEMENTARY TINA MAYER, PRINCIPAL
M
rs. Gigliotti and her second-
grade science classes
had lots of fun while
learning about chemical
reactions. The students conducted a
special scientific experiment where they
made predictions about what would
happen when they combined baking
soda, vinegar and food coloring in a
pumpkin! Mrs. Gigliotti counted down
to zero so the students could pour
their colored vinegar into the baking
soda-filled pumpkins at the exact same
time. Amid giggles and screams, the
kids watched intently as frothy, bubbly
mixtures poured out of the tops of their
pumpkins. The end result was a pumpkin
volcano! The students LOVED the
experiment and could not wait to try it
at home with their own pumpkins. It was
a wonderful opportunity to reinforce
their science lessons and engage the
students in making exciting discoveries.
