GILL HALL ELEMENTARY TINA MAYER, PRINCIPAL The 2017-2018 school year has been busy with the implementation of new educational programs, benchmark assessments, student growth and achievement, as well as working toward goals that embrace our core values. Here are just some of the highlights to share with you. High school students from Mr. Shearouse’s Academic English classes recently created children’s books for a school project. These students traveled to Gill Hall Elementary School on Tuesday, October 31st to share the stories they had developed with our fourth-grade students. The children’s stories were adapted from an Anglo-Saxon epic poem titled, “Beowulf.” The high school students had been studying this poem for several weeks and took their learning to a different level as they created their own books, suitable for young readers, which paralleled the story from “Beowulf.” After reading the adapted children’s stories, students from Mrs. Hampsay’s, Mrs. Swogger’s, and Ms. McWilliam’s fourth-grade classes participated in a lively question and answer session. The high school students also developed hands-on activities to correspond with the stories they had created. The fourth grade students thoroughly enjoyed listening to the high school students’ stories and were engaged as they participated in the collaborative activities. DARE Students participated in important safety and drug awareness programs designed to educate and keep them safe in and around the community: • The Gill Fire Department conducted a Fire Safety demonstration for our kindergarten and 1st grade students. Thanks to Mr. Galis for organizing! • Gill Hall held its annual intruder/evacuation drill utilizing A.L.I.C.E. (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counterattack, Evacuate) strategies. The book “I’m Not Scared, I’m Prepared” is read to all students in order to prepare them for the drill. • Officer Perella from the Jefferson Hills Police Department educated the 4th and 5th grade students on the dangers of drugs and alcohol, as well as reviewing Halloween safety tips. A spooktacular time was had by all at our annual Halloween parade and parties, and we look forward to more excitement in the months ahead.
