Ethan Dunsey of New York Life: Helping His Community Plan for the Future
Ethan Dunsey surprises himself with how passionate he gets when talking about financial services.“ Everyone needs to know how to handle their money and plan for their real future,” he says.“ We should be teaching it to kids in school, not expecting them to just pick it up when they start their first job.”
Dunsey is back home in West Jefferson after his four years at St. Vincent College, and he’ s eager to help break through the barriers he sees in how young people treat their financial futures.
“ People my age don’ t want to talk about what’ s going to happen to them when they get older; they don’ t want to consider the bad things that might happen,” he explains, describing the way his peers avoid topics that he now talks about every day— whether it’ s long-term care, disability or even life insurance.
Dunsey, a financial services professional with New York Life, has had experiences that others probably have as well. He’ s listened to family members discuss options for long-term care for aging loved ones. He’ s heard about shifting retirement plans, and he’ s watched how small business owners put their long-term financial security last.
His time with New York Life has changed how he thinks about these conversations though. Instead of seeing them as unlikely situations, he sees them as things you just need to plan for.
Dunsey believes that members of his generation need to take control of their financial future now, because this is the time when they can see the biggest payoff of long-term investments. He and so many others who graduated high school during the pandemic know that you can’ t take anything for granted— even the norms of just going to school or the office.
In talking with him, you get the sense that he’ s bursting with the desire to help others, and believes in what he’ s selling. He’ s quick to note that he’ s not doing this on his own:“ I’ m working with New York Life— they’ ve been around for more than 180 years, and have a legacy that I’ m proud to be a part of. The commitments they make to their customers are ones they can back financially.”
Whether it’ s meeting with people to talk about their financial futures or meeting up to play basketball, Ethan Dunsey is glad to be back and settling into West Jefferson in a new way— as one who will help to shape its future.
“ I love that even as the faces change, the desire to support each other and build up the community hasn’ t gone away. I’ m excited to pay forward what this community invested in me, in whatever ways I can.”
