After a long year spent mainly at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic , kids ( and their parents !) are more than ready to get outside and enjoy warm days and sunshine . Here are 50 fun ideas for family outings this summer !

1 . Pack up the bicycles and take a family ride on one of our area ’ s many trails , like the Great Allegheny Passage , Montour Trail , or Westmoreland Heritage Trail .
2 . Visit the wild animals at Living Treasures wild animal park ( locations in the Laurel Highlands and New Castle ).
3 . Visit fabulous feathered friends at the National Aviary . Located on Pittsburgh ’ s North Side , it is the only independent indoor nonprofit zoo dedicated to birds !
4 . While you ’ re on the North Side , stop at Gus and Yiayia ’ s famous iceball cart for a delicious treat ( next to the tennis courts in West Park ).
5 . Go swimming at one of the area ’ s public pools .
6 . Cool down by playing on the North Shore ’ s Water Steps fountain ( located between PNC Park and the Fort Duquesne Bridge in Riverfront Park ).
7 . Visit the lions , tigers and bears ( oh my !) at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium in Highland Park .
8 . Explore one ( or all !) of Pittsburgh ’ s award-winning Carnegie museums , which include the Carnegie Museum of Art , the Carnegie Museum of Natural History , the Carnegie Science Center , and the Andy Warhol Museum .
9 . Splash around in one of the area ’ s many neighborhood spray parks .
10 . Take a ride on the Monongahela or Duquesne Incline — and if you ’ re up for a road trip , visit the Johnstown Incline , too , which is billed as the steepest vehicular incline in the world .
11 . Enjoy a movie under the stars by attending one of the area ’ s “ Cinema in the Park ” events .
12 . Take a walk through Randyland , the colorful , eccentric courtyard museum built by the creative vision of artist Randy Gilson ( 501 Arch Street on Pittsburgh ’ s North Side ).
