SUMMER IN JEFFERSON HILLS
Summer Recreation in the Hills
Walking, Hiking, Biking and Fishing
The scenic beauty of our local trails can be accessed within
minutes of your home in Jefferson Hills.
Honored as Pennsylvania’s 2017 Trail of the Year, the Montour
Trail is the longest suburban rail-trail in the United States,
encompassing 63 miles. The Montour trail runs through
communities west and south of Pittsburgh and follows the
abandoned rights of way of the Montour Railroad and the Peters
Creek branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
The Montour trailheads closest to Jefferson Hills are easily
accessible to walkers, bikers and fishermen at Clairton, Route 51
(Large); Jefferson Hills (Gill Hall) and Triphammer Road (South
Park). See Mountourtrail.org for additional information, maps,
directions and amenities.
Take some photos when you visit our scenic Montour trail this
summer and share them with us ([email protected]).
We’ll publish them in the next edition of the magazine.
Each spring, Jefferson Hills
hosts a fish-for-fun day, a
catch and release event for
children at Peters Creek
(near Waterman Road East),
stocking the Creek with
approximately 900 trout.
Nine year old Collin Arthrell,
who frequently fishes in the
area, has won the prize for
largest catch every year for
the past five years. He’s
pictured here with an 18 in.
rainbow trout that won him
a gift card and new
fishing rod.
The Tri Community
Anglers Association stocks
trout throughout the
summer in the six mile Piney
Fork and Peters Creek that
runs through South Park,
Jefferson Hills and Clairton.
See the Anglers’ website at
http://tcaa.peterscreek.org
for more information about
fishing in the area.
