“Sail the High Seas” on the U.S. Brig Niagara – The
West Jefferson Hills Historical Society is pleased to offer
Society and community members this enchanting program
for August. The U.S. Brig Niagara, official flagship of the State
of Pennsylvania, entered the history books in 1813 when
Oliver Hazard Perry sailed the original Niagara in a stunning
victory over the British. A modern reproduction of the ship
still sails the Great Lakes today as a floating museum and
ambassador of goodwill from the state of Pennsylvania.
In this presentation, Ed Hale—retired history teacher and
volunteer crewmember on the U.S. Brig Niagara—will
recount his experiences of sailing each summer in the
spartan conditions on the modern replica of the ship. So
join us in August to hear about the rich history of this vessel
and discover what it truly means to “sail the high seas” on a
ship like the Niagara. Refreshments served.

“Idlewild: The History and Memories of Pennsylvania’s
Oldest Amusement Park” – The WJHHS program for
September is sure to evoke happy childhood memories
of family fun and amusement park thrills experienced
at Idlewild Park. WJHHS invites Society and community
members to hear about and relive again the thrills and
amusements at Idlewild that have delighted generations
of families since the late 1800s. Developed by the Mellon
family as a picnic grove, Idlewild expanded over the years
to include rides, entertainments, and other attractions.
Later the park grew further to include the adjacent Story
Book Forest, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood of Make Believe,
a Wild West town, and even a water slide complex. Author
and historian, Jennifer Sopko, will relate this heartwarming
history of Pennsylvania’s oldest amusement park which
is sure to entertain. Miss Sopko’s book will be available
for purchase.
