ANNUAL NETWORKING BREAKFAST AND PROGRAM
On Friday, April 26, 2019 the annual breakfast and program was hosted at
Jefferson Hospital. The program presented information about infection
prevention and the state of EMS (emergency medical services) in
Pennsylvania.
Brian W. Graper, MBA, MLT (ASCP) the Laboratory
Director, Jefferson Hospital and Cindie J.
Andrews, BS, RN Infection Prevention Manager,
Jefferson Hospital, spoke about The ABC’s of
Antibiotics, Reasons to be Vaccinated, and the
importance of washing hands. When taking
antibiotics remember to take the entire
prescription even if you are feeling better. Also
antibiotics do not kill viruses only bacteria so
sometimes a medical care provider will not
prescribe an antibiotic. The students from Thomas Jefferson High School who
were in attendance were invited to take a hand washing challenge. The
students wore gloves, were given a drop of paint and to pretend to wash
their hands. Everyone was reminded to wash in-between the fingers, under
the nails, and spend at least 20 seconds scrubbing (hum-Happy Birthday
twice from beginning to end). With the reoccurrence of measles, the
importance of being vaccinated has come into the spotlight. Please make
sure everyone is vaccinated not just children.
Next, Joanne Cook, MS, RN, EMT-P, an EMS specialist, gave an overview of the
state of emergency services in the State of Pennsylvania. The EMS services
have be available for forty years. First responders to an ambulance call/
accident may be any or all of the following and training varies with each
person: Police/Fireman, Basic EMT, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic. As time
has passed, the care an individual receives has changed drastically over the
years. Initially, an individual was placed in an ambulance and driven to the
hospital as quickly as possible. Today the emergency responders are often
in direct contact with the hospital collecting data and receiving instructions
from nurses and doctors. Jefferson Hospital receives about thirty to forty
ambulances into the emergency room daily.
