Ruane, Jr., MD

f Dr. Edward J. Ruane, Jr.’s name sounds familiar to you, it
may be because you grew up with him. Born and raised
in Pleasant Hills and a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High
School, Dr. Ruane’s only time away from his hometown were
the years he spent at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana
working on his undergraduate degree and at Duke University
in North Carolina where he earned his medical degree. Now,
having completed his residency at the top-ranked University
of Pittsburgh Department of Plastic Surgery, where he was
elected to serve as Administrative Chief Resident, Dr. Ruane is
looking forward to putting down roots at St. Clair Plastic Surgery
Associates, where he joins noted plastic surgeon Robert W.
Bragdon, MD, FACS.
“For me, this is a homecoming. I am overjoyed at being able
to provide a service back to the community in the South Hills of
Pittsburgh,” Dr. Ruane says.
Trained in all aspects of plastic surgery, ranging from
reconstructive to cosmetic, Dr. Ruane has a special interest in
breast reconstruction for survivors of breast cancer. “I received
the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Fellowship
during medical school and was able to devote a year to cancer-
related research,” he explains. “The clinical translation of that
experience has been providing care for breast cancer patients,
helping to make them feel whole again. Most women are
candidates for some form of breast reconstruction, often at the
same time as their mastectomy or lumpectomy. Others, who just
want to focus on their cancer care, can delay the procedure and
still have remarkable results at a time that’s right for them.”
At St. Clair Hospital, Dr. Ruane will bring his knowledge and
expertise to one of the most modern and up-to-date facilities
in the region. “My goal is to offer the full gamut of the most
advanced techniques,” he says. “That includes microsurgical
breast reconstruction, which involves tissue transplantation most
commonly from the abdomen.”
Dr. Ruane’s interest and expertise in plastic surgery also
includes cosmetic breast surgery, cosmetic and reconstructive
facial surgery, nerve decompression surgery for migraine
headaches and carpal tunnel syndrome, body contouring for
patients after pregnancy and weight loss, skin cancer treatment,
and wound care.
St. Clair Plastic Surgery Associates is the newest division
of St. Clair Medical Services. Its mission is to offer the finest

a comfortable and confidential environment. Operating out of
St. Clair Hospital, patients have the added security of access to
