WEST JEFFERSON HILLS SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS

The hum of a sewing machine, cutting of fabric, and steam from an iron fills the air as designs are brought to life. Creativity fills the classroom, as young minds work to create something to express themselves, through just pieces of fabric.

When many think of school, images of books and computers along with the basic subjects like math and English, usually fill people ' s minds. But it ' s a different experience for Thomas Jefferson ' s Fabric Fashion class, taught by Michele Stoicovy. Students are able to find an escape from the usual stress and busyness of high school, and find themselves in a tranquil, relaxing environment.
The semester-long class allows students to use their own creativity to create fashion designs, accessories, and even home decorations. The class gives students an amazing opportunity to step out of their comfort zone and cultivate skills beyond reading and math equations. The course consists of three levels: Fab Fashion I, II, and III. Starting with the basics, students initially learn sewing skills like hand stitching, how to read patterns, clothing construction, and how to work a sewing machine.
As students continue through high school, they are given the opportunity to develop their skills. Fab Fashion II and III become available to students after they complete the first class. The class becomes more student-oriented and driven by imagination, the possibilities are endless.
Family Consumer Science Teacher Michele Stoicovy, shares,“ Students are encouraged to sew to their ability.” Allowing students the freedom to have their own ideas not only makes the class more enjoyable, but also allows class time to be more relaxed, leaving worries of not fulfilling expectations out the door.
Thomas Jefferson alumna and FCS medallion award winner, Zoe Krizan, shares that the“ relaxing environment” of the class was what made it such a great time.“ This class allowed me to temporarily take my mind off of things. Mrs. Stoicovy always
made my time spent in her classroom worth it.” Zoe, among others, had the opportunity to make designs such as tote bags from old jeans, stuffed animals, t-shirts and dresses. With the variety of creations, it ' s hard to get bored in this creative environment. Stoicovy shares she ' s even watched students create their own prom dresses,“ It is so exciting to see the progress and the final project,” says Stoicovy.
Although Fab Fashion ' s main goal is to foster general interest in fashion, the class is filled with other skills. The course challenges students’ artistic abilities, creativity, and design skills. Along with incorporating reading patterns, measuring fabric, and learning different stitching techniques such as a running, slip, and back stitch. When asked, Counselor Regina Slater shares that the class is“ a great opportunity,
with no grade or age stipulation.” The class also pairs well with other classes at TJHS like Art, Intro to PR, Public Speaking, and Graphic Design.
As we continue to advance, the world will always need space for fashion and design. The universal skills and techniques learned through Fab Fashion are ones students can use throughout their lives. From sewing a button back onto a shirt, to discovering a career path, the utility of the class is endless. Although sewing used to be a necessity for so many, it may now be viewed as“ outdated” to some, but Stoicovy shares,“ Now, people are concerned with conservation, upcycling clothing, and creating new outfits and projects from vintage fabrics.”
With the art of fashion evolving, it ' s more important than ever for students to learn the basics of fashion design. Whether it ' s creating a holiday pillow or designing an entirely new outfit, the Fab Fashion courses at Thomas Jefferson High School offer opportunities for everyone. These classes not only foster creativity but equip students with basic fundamental skills for life.
