G. O. L. D. Night at JHIS Brings Pittsburgh Riveters to WJH
On February 19, Jefferson Hills Intermediate School hosted more than 200 girls in third through fifth grades for the annual G. O. L. D. Night. The two-hour event is geared around empowering courageous, independent leaders. The intermediate school students were joined by mentors from Pleasant Hills Middle School and Thomas Jefferson High School.
This year’ s event featured athletes from the Pittsburgh Riveters, Pittsburgh’ s new pro women’ s soccer franchise. Several Riveters
players and a coach talked with the girls about making good decisions, friendship, and women in sports. Then they got out of their seats for a fun game alongside the Riveters players.
A special thanks to the West Jefferson Hills Foundation for Education for the grant that made the evening possible. est Jefferson Hills WEST JEFFERSON HILLS SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS

TJ’ s First Polar Plunge Lives Up to Its Name
When Thomas Jefferson High School educators and district administrators signed up to participate in the school’ s first Cool Schools Polar Plunge supporting the Special Olympics, they likely expected it to be cold, but maybe not as cold as it was outside Acrisure Stadium on Friday, February 21. Temperatures were around 20 degrees, the wind-chill was in the single digits, and snow flurries added to the day’ s wintry feel. The water temperature? A refreshing 34 degrees. But that didn’ t stop a group of nearly three dozen TJ students, educators, administrators, and parents from taking the frigid leap into swimming pools set up on Art Rooney Avenue.
When the group known as the Jumpin’ Jags signed up for the fundraiser, its members hoped to raise $ 500 for the Special Olympics. But after a tremendous amount of support from families, school staff, and the community, the Jumpin’ Jags raised more than $ 3,000 for Special Olympics. Thomas Jefferson High School is a proud member of the Special Olympics Unified Sports program. The TJ Unified Bocce team rolled on to the winter sports schedule two years ago, and the Jaguars just wrapped up their third competitive season through the Special Olympics.
When the morning arrived, the Jaguars lined up wearing their blue Jumpin’ Jags t-shirts, counted down, and made the plunge. Many made quite the splash, but just about all of them frantically rushed towards the ladder to escape the bone-chilling water. Even before they could warm up following the jump, the Jumpin’ Jags agreed that this will become a tradition at Thomas Jefferson.
