Jefferson Hills Intermediate School CHRISTOPHER VERY, PRINCIPAL “G ive a dollar. Save a life.” These words, spoken by a 9 year old girl named Angel Arellano, was the motto that sparked our 3rd grade students’ interest in helping to change the life of some lucky animals. The 3rd grade Reading classes, taught by Mrs. Fite, Mrs. Stefl, Mrs. Baleno, Mrs. Gaitaniella, and Ms. Pollack, recently read a nonfiction story titled, Here’s My Dollar, which informed students about Angel Arellano, who made a $1 donation to the Chaffee Zoo in Fresno, CA. At the time of her donation, the zoo was in financial trouble and was on the verge of closing. Her donation sparked a worldwide campaign to raise money for the zoo, which still operates today. Our students and their families made their own donations to the Chaffee Zoo, bringing in a grand total of $303! Each donation goes toward enrichment and food for the animal species chosen, as well as supplying them with fun items such as toys for playtime. As part of this project, the zoo has sent 48 WEST JEFFERSON HILLS each classroom a stuffed animal, a photograph, fact sheet and certificate of adoption. In addition, our names are on display at the Chaffee Zoo for one year so that we will continue to be honored for our generous donation. In all, our students were able to adopt a red wolf, cheetah, meerkat, lion and sloth. (Or more affectionately known as, Buckeye, TJ, Creepers, Kiki and Buddy S’mores!) Many wonderful learning opportunities have come from this project. Students have learned the importance of giving to others, standing up for a cause, and taking action when you see someone or something in need. We are anxious to continue learning about the world around us, and we will soon be able to make that school-wide connection through observation at our new terrariums! Thank you again to all of the 3rd grade students and families for your generous donations. Because of you, we have made a difference!
