Ever wonder, “Why Recycle?”
Sure, it’s good for the environment, but
there are many other reasons to recycle as
well. When you recycle right, and recycle often,
great things happen!
Every day we encounter hundreds of
recyclable items. By recycling properly, we
can save tons (literally, tons) of raw materials
which can subsequently save time, energy, and
expense.
Consider this: recycling one aluminum can
will save enough energy to:
• Run a TV for two hours
• Power a 14-watt Compact Florescent Light
(CFL) bulb for three hours
• Power a computer for three hours
If we all do our part, the results can really
add up. Last year alone, Waste Management
recycled enough material to fill nearly 169,000
737 jets.
We need your help to keep recycling clean
and green. Certain items can slow down the
recycling process, or ruin an entire load, for
instance.
These items include:
• Plastic shopping bags
• Containers holding solid foods, especially
greasy foods
• Liquids
• Soggy Items
RoadBotics Civic Technology Company to Assess
Borough Roads
The Borough of Jefferson Hills is working with a civic
technology company, RoadBotics, to assess Borough roads
for damages and to inform future maintenance and planning
decisions.
In August, the Pittsburgh-based RoadBotics deployed one of
its certified operations technicians to drive the 55 miles of the
Jefferson Hills road network. Using standard passenger vehicles
equipped with windshield-mounted smartphones, RoadBotics
collected video data of the Borough’s road network.
After driving the 55-mile section of roadway, RoadBotics
uploaded the collected video data to its secure cloud for analysis.
The cutting-edge machine learning technology will view all
video data and identify road surface damage (e.g., potholes)
with unprecedented precision, speed, and accuracy. The analysis
results in an interactive map that shows Borough officials up-to-
date condition of their roads and helps them develop effective
road maintenance plans.
