GREAT AMERICAN BOOK
SALE—JUNE 9-14
For the second year, the much-
anticipated Great American Book Sale will
take place at McDowell Intermediate High
School—and it’s air-conditioned! You can
spend hours browsing through the 75,000
gently used books, DVDs and CDs. Many
types of books are available—fiction,
science fiction, mystery, romance, home
and craft, children’s books, sports, travel,
religion, self-help, cookbooks and history.
Hardcover books and large paperbacks
are $1. Regular-size paperbacks are 50
cents. There is a small section of collectible
books and coffee table books with slightly
higher prices. Go early then return during
the week to discover even more hidden
treasures! The book sale will be:
• Sunday, June 9, from noon to 8 p.m.
• Monday, June 10, through Thursday,
June 13, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Friday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

THE COLOR RUN
RETURNS TO ERIE
World’s Largest Event Series is back in
Perry Square, Saturday, Aug. 10
The Erie Sports Commission announced
that The Color Run will return to Erie on
Saturday, Aug. 10, with the “Love Tour.”
This will mark the fifth time that the event
will be hosted in Erie since 2014. (It was
not held here in 2018.)
Registration for the event is now open.
“We are thrilled that The Color Run has
decided to return to Erie in 2019,” said
Mark Jeanneret, Executive Director of the
Erie Sports Commission. “This event has
had enormous success in our region, with
tens of thousands of participants bringing
the energy and fun to Perry Square each
and every time. I’d like to thank our
partners at The Color Run and the City of
Erie for helping us to make this happen.”
Dubbed “The Happiest 5K on the
Planet,” The Color Run is an untimed 5K

race in which thousands of runners start
the race wearing white and are doused from
head to toe in different colors along the race
course. The race will start and end in Perry
Square.
For the Love Tour theme, The Color
Run is encouraging people to show love for
themselves, each other and the planet.
The Love Tour will also feature a new
1970s-inspired aesthetic, new photo ops
and redesigned merchandise. The 2019
course also features two new “double color”
zones, in addition to the regular checkpoints
where runners are doused in colored
powder. After the race, runners will enjoy a
reimagined finish festival, featuring a live DJ
and massive color throws.
“The Love Tour definitely has a special
feel to it,” said Isaac Krieger, The Color Run
Erie event director. “Every color runner is
going to leave the event feeling like they
were just a part of something extraordinary.”

POLISH HERITAGE
FESTIVAL
Holy Trinity’s 26th Annual Zabawa Polish
Heritage Festival will be held Aug. 23-25,
and feature internationally known polka
bands and authentic Polish foods, bakery
items and beverages.
Friday hours are from 5 to 10 p.m.,
Saturday hours are from noon to 10 p.m.,
and Sunday hours are from noon to 6 p.m.

ANNOUNCES ANNUAL
EVENT AWARD WINNERS
The Erie Sports Commission (ESC)
presented seven awards when it hosted
the fifth annual Event Recognition and
Awards Dinner on Thursday, Feb. 21, at the
Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel.

The ESC introduced a new “Dedication
to Erie” category, which was created to
honor events that have been multiple ESC
award winners and individuals who have
demonstrated a profound impact on sports
tourism in the Erie region. The first two awards
in this category were presented to the Stars
and Stripes Gymnastics Invitational, which
was accepted by Doug and Tina Pershun, and
former ESC Executive Director Ron Sertz.
After the presentation, the award was named
after Sertz, and will be called the Ron Sertz
Dedication to Erie award in the future.
n Rod Didion accepted the 2018 Impact
Award on behalf of the VNEA PA State 8-Ball
Tournament, which generated an estimated
$1.3 million in economic impact in 2018, and
was held for the 37th year this past March.
n Ray Kraus and Carlo Fachetti were named
the 2018 Volunteers of the Year for their work
on the Battle of Lake Erie Softball Tournament,
hosted by the Erie Frost. The June tournament
sold out with more than 60 teams last year.
n The 2018 New Event of the Year Award
was presented to Brad Davis, Mercyhurst
University Athletic Director, for the 2018 Ice
Breaker Tournament, presented by LECOM.
The two-day men’s ice hockey tournament
featured four Division I powerhouses in
October: the University of Notre Dame,
Providence College, Miami University and host
Mercyhurst.
n Casey Wells, Erie Events Executive
Director, presented the 2018 Event Series of
the Year Award to Champion Cheer Central,
which hosted four events in Erie in 2018. The
events, which saw continuous growth year-
over-year, generated a combined estimated
economic impact of $1.3 million.
n Lake Erie Cyclefest was named the 2018
Locally Managed Event of the Year for its
