Prep the Teacher
If your children have IEPs or 504 plans;
whether for learning challenges or gifted/
talented services, it’s best to start the year
with prepping the teachers. If possible, try
to schedule an informal meeting, phone call,
or just email the homeroom teachers before
school starts so that you can explain your
children’s situation. Even discussing simple
things such as seat placement or a child’s
attention level can be addressed early on in
the year without turning into a problem later
on. Teachers appreciate a pro-active stance
because they want the year to be as smooth as
you do.
Making the transition from summer
vacation to school can be a fun way to bond
with your children on many levels and allow
them to have an easier time of dealing with a
new teacher, classmates, or school. The time
dedicated to this transition can have a huge
impact on your children’s success in school. n
