West Allegheny High School – Preparing Students for Life After High School through ACCELERATE Internships
West Allegheny’ s ACCELERATE program— Advancing Career Connections through Experiential Learning & Exposure to Real-World Application, Training, & Exploration— is preparing students for far more than graduation. Students are stepping beyond the classroom and into authentic professional environments where learning becomes tangible, relationships become meaningful, and future careers begin to take shape.
The ACCELERATE Internships began in the summer of 2023, when five students were given an opportunity to serve as special education teaching assistant interns during the district’ s Extended School Year program. Over the past three years, the program has continuously expanded in response to student interests and career goals.
During the 2025-26 school year, high school students had access to three classifications of internships: Course Embedded, Academic Day, and Extended Day, with over 350 students serving in these roles.
The following senior spotlights highlight just a few of the many ways students are transforming learning into meaningful real-world experiences. These stories were developed with the support of senior Nathalia Canelhas through her Marketing, Communications, and Broadcast Media Internship, where she assisted in interviewing students, gathering information, and helping share the impact of the ACCELERATE Internship Program across the West Allegheny community. Through her work, Canelhas helped capture the voices, experiences, and future aspirations of her fellow interns, showcasing how experiential learning is helping students build confidence, discover passions, and prepare for life beyond high school.
