PITTSBURGH BOTANIC
GARDEN RECEIVES
FEDEX GROUND GRANT
FOR TREE VILLAGE
EMBELLISHMENTS
The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden has
received a grant from FedEx Ground to add
finishing touches to its new Tree Village in the
garden’s European Woods.
The Tree Village was created from the trunk
of a massive 200-year-old white oak that was
brought down in a spring storm in 2015. The
trunk was subsequently cut into three lengths,
which were then placed upright onto stone
plinths and topped with thatched roofs.
The FedEx Ground grant will be used to
create decorative doors and other whimsical
embellishments for these structures, further
delighting visitors who come upon the Tree
Village in the European Woods.
“The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden is grateful
for the generosity of FedEx Ground and
for helping to complete the Tree Village,”
6 724.942.0940 TO ADVERTISE | West Allegheny
said Greg Nace, President of the Pittsburgh
Botanic Garden. “It’s been great to develop
a partnership with FedEx Ground — their
employees have held several extremely
productive work days at the Garden so it’s very
special to receive this financial investment as
well.”
A story about the creation of the Tree Village
is available at pittsburghbotanicgarden.org/
forest-houses-topped-with-thatched-roofs.
The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, located just
10 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, offers
visitors the opportunity to reconnect with
the beauty of our region. It inspires people to
grow through immersion in a world of natural
outdoor wonder to nourish mind, body and
spirit. The first 60 acres consists of more than
three miles of woodland trails, a stunning
meadow with over 550 native white dogwood
trees, and a serene lotus pond.
Once complete, the Pittsburgh Botanic
Garden will be the fifth largest botanic garden
in the U.S. at 460 acres and will include
18 distinct gardens, celebration venues,
a visitor center and a center for botanic
research. For more information please visit

PROVIDENCE
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
CELEBRATES NEW STATEOF-THE-ART FACILITY
After more than 40 years, Providence
Presbyterian Church finally has a permanent
home. The nearly $3 million project,
constructed adjacent to the previous sanctuary,
had simply become a necessity to house a
growing attendance.
“Every Sunday morning we had to open
the doors in the back and set up chairs in the
foyer,” said Dr. Ray E. Heiple, Jr., Providence’s
senior pastor since 2010. “It got to the point
where we were either going to build a new
sanctuary or start sending people away.”
Once construction began in the fall of 2014,
the congregation needed to worship off-site
until the new parking lot could be completed.
