The grant is one of 114 totaling more than $25 million in funding from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for protection of Pennsylvania’s water resources. According to Christine Koebley, the PBG’s Interim President, “This grant will help support the environmental mission of the garden. The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden has a proven track record in deploying innovative water treatment systems to clean and restore acid mine drainage. The treatment system at our lotus pond won Christine Koebley the 2014 Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.” The grant will be used to clean acid mine drainage within the headwaters of the Kentucky Hollow area at the garden. Mitigating this discharge is a key component of a master plan to restore Kentucky Hollow’s ecosystem to its original state. This project is part of a larger plan to rehabilitate 5,000 feet of the stream bank area in Kentucky Hollow. The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden offers an outdoor experience unlike any in the region. Acres of forest that were farmed, logged and mined are coming back to life with gorgeous gardens, inviting trails, forested slopes and open meadows. Our 60-acre Woodlands includes an environmental award-winning lotus pond, stunning dogwood meadow, fun Exploration Stations for families and three miles of peaceful trails. A beautifully restored 1870s barn is available to celebrate special occasions.
