THE YOUNG GUN EVERYONE WANTS TO HIRE
ONE‘ GREAT’ WEEKEND OF RACES DREW THOUSANDS TO DOWNTOWN PITTSBURGH
The Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race, presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, and the Dollar Bank Junior Great Race returned to the streets of Pittsburgh Sept. 27 for an action-packed weekend of fitness and fun.
More than 10,000 runners and walkers from 38 states participated in the events, celebrating community spirit and healthy living.
The weekend kicked off with the 30th annual Dollar Bank Junior Great Race at Gateway Center, where more than 500 children and families enjoyed a morning of excitement. Young participants took part in the 1-mile Family Fun Run, Tot Trot and Diaper Dash, each earning a medal, goody bag and the beloved Eat’ n Park Smiley Cookie. The event featured crafts, balloons, face painting and appearances by Pittsburgh mascots like the Pirate Parrot, the Pirates Pierogies and Kenny Kangaroo.
Sunday’ s races brought thousands more to the city for the 5K and 10K runs, continuing a tradition that began in 1977. Highlights included the 17 Perfect Great Racers, who have run every Great Race 10K since its beginning, and the Caliguiri family honoring the late Mayor Richard S. Caliguiri and raising awareness of amyloidosis.
Runners and spectators capped off the weekend with a Black & Gold Dublin Watch Party on Sixth Street, featuring live Irish music, interactive games and a viewing of the Steelers vs. Vikings game.
Together, the Great Race and Junior Great Race once again showcased the city’ s passion for movement, camaraderie and tradition— proving why it’ s called one great weekend! ■ s p e c i a l t h a n k s t o m y i n d u s t r y m e n t o r s John Cramer Henry Pituch
