For more than 30 years, RBC Wealth Management’ s Eric Gregory has been successfully helping people plan for retirement, a role that gives him immense personal and professional satisfaction. And, with RBC Wealth Management’ s opening of a Southpointe office, he’ s introducing himself to an entirely new community in which to share his talents.
Gregory started out in finance in 1986, after graduating from WVU. In 1990, he became a certified financial planner, and, in his current role with RBC, he is a portfolio manager, meaning he not only advises clients, but makes decisions for their financial future on their behalf.
“ My typical client is someone who’ s five or 10 years out from retirement age and has $ 500,000 or more in assets to work with,” Gregory said.“ These are usually people who have retirement plans and 401( k) s from several jobs to work with, in addition to other various investments, and they want to plan correctly for using those assets to
fund their goals throughout their retirement.”
Gregory, through financial forecasting and analysis, along with a lot of listening to the clients in regard to their post-retirement aspirations, then charts a course for them to determine the income necessary for them to maintain their standard of living and achieve their dreams.
“ Some people plan for travel. Some want to buy a summer home,” Gregory said.“ Then others just want to ensure that their assets are properly passed along to the next generation so that their children and grandchildren are well cared for. The more assets a client has to work with,

the bigger the decisions they have to make regarding those assets and we have to ascertain the level of risk tolerance they’ re willing to accept with regard to their portfolio. There are a lot of moving parts involved.”
If it sounds like Gregory works for clients more like a trusted friend than what you would imagine, it’ s because it’ s true, a fact that he attributes to the culture of his parent company- RBC.
“ RBC Wealth Management is a subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Canada,” he said.“ It’ s a smaller firm, based in the midwest rather than on
Wall Street. The ethics and values of the firm are second to none, which made it a good fit for me. The goal of the company is for advisors to be good stewards of clients’ assets, not to rack up excessive fees. You reach milestones with [ our company ] more quickly and we waive those fees that other firms only waive for multimillion-dollar clients.”
Gregory said that with RBC, he has achieved a level of professional satisfaction that he doubts he could find anywhere else.
“ It’ s easier to feel good about your job if you feel good about what you’ re doing for people,” he said.“ You feel better about management, about your firm, and that confidence spills over to your clients. We have clients here who are third-generation clients, which is unheard of in this business unless you’ re really good at what you do.”
Outside of the office, Gregory continues to help people through his community service: He’ s a member of the Bridgeville-South Fayette Rotary and three-time past president. He’ s also a member and on session at Bethany Presbyterian Church and an active fundraiser for Our Clubhouse, which was formerly Gilda’ s Club, a charity supporting anyone touched by cancer.
